Passport to South Africa

Elias Melamed

Elijas Melamed was born in Lithuania on 1 January 1846. It is believed he settled in Tartu – then Dorpat – in the middle of the19th century. He and his wife had eleven daughters and one son Hirsch (Harry). Branches of the original family still live in Estonia in the 21st century: Glikmann and Blumberg families.
Five of his daughters and his only son emigrated to South Africa.
In 1922 the widower Elijas and his daughter Sarah Stark left Estonia for Cape Town South Africa where they, together with Harry, are buried at Woltemade Jewish Cemetery - one of the earliest Jewish cemeteries in South Africa.

NB! Nationality - Jewish (1922...)

These documents are dedicated in honour of the blessed memory of our patriarch and matriarch Elijas and Yochevet Melamed (nee Stark) by the descendants of their daughter Charlotte Melamed, and her husband Philip Maisel (Shrage Faive) who left Estonia at the turn of the 20th century to settle in Cape Town South Africa.

Children of Charlotte (Charlotta also known as Zlate) and Philip Maisel:

Dedicated by the Maisel • Ticktin • Stern • Stoltzman • Danzig • Rubin • Price families, and their descendants.

Members of the family are scattered across the globe, but the memory of Estonia remains.
